Free SSH shells for you!

Now that the server has a long-term domain name, I have been adding e-mail software.  In light of this, I wanted to let members and prospective members know that I am not going to read anyone's e-mail messages, ever.

I still assert the right to check files in your home folder to make sure there is no illegal activity.  As this is an educational service only, I think that is a fair approach.  I already had one situation with criminal activity.  I don't like people who hurt or scam others, To prevent this happening, my only choices are to make the registration process much more difficult than it currently is, or to keep it easy but follow up with inspection of home folders.  Since this is a zero cost service, the latte...

I have been having difficulty finding the time to sit down and process the backlogged applications received since the fire in November 2017. I am sorry that I have not been able to respond in a timely manner, but I still have all the applications and will answer them.

Instead of emailing applicants, I have been dealing with problems currently affecting the service.

Unexpected reboots The VPS has been randomly hard rebooting about once a week since August, and only this week did the hosting company agree that their system was at fault, and migrated the shell server to another hypervisor that I am hoping will be more stable.

First, this is a notice to everyone that the server's temporary address is yfs1.sytes.net.

I have a bunch of stuff to catch up on, and this week will be the week that I put time into doing so.

First, I have almost 40 applications to process, which basically means sending out emails inviting the applicants to the IRC channel for a quick interview.  The daunting part is that I face having to actually work out times to talk with all these applicants.  I know, I know, it is a pain to have to do this, but it is necessary to help ensure that applicants know that I have zero tolerance for violations of the terms of service.

Next, I have emails to answer.  I will reply to the messages in my gmail as well as any local emails sent to my a...

In setting up this service, I put my own time and money into it without expecting anything in return.

I intend to create an environment which supports learning how to use unix-like systems, learning programming, and learning how computers work at a better level than most people do.

I did not set up the service for criminals to take advantage of innocent people.  I recently invited the police over to my house to investigate suspicious activity on my server, something I was greatly displeased with having to do.  But I will do it again if necessary.

If there was ever an idea that a free shell service is a safe place to commit crimes without anyone noticing or caring, THIS IS NOT THE CASE HERE.

There is only so much that one can do to pre...

I was reflecting on my time spent looking for free shell accounts a few years ago, and I remembered all the trouble that I went through trying to get one.

I was really surprised by the amount of red tape involved in applying for a shell account on many sites.  I couldn't believe the idea that somebody wants a postcard sent to them in order to grant a free shell.  Then there were sites where you were supposed to get a vouch or two from other members.  I quickly grew hopeless with those as the resident members were rude and cocky.  And lastly, needing a "good" reason to get a shell has baffled me -- to this day, I still can't figure out what a "good" reason is.

There were some providers that did give me a shell, but I quickl...
