I have been thinking about the first year of running YFS and what I need to improve on. The first and foremost issue is finances. I thought it would be smart to re-use an old laptop for the shell server, but because the cost of a residential Internet connection is way more per system than at a data centre, I am going to have to run YFS on a virtual private server.
Even if I go ahead with my plan to make a CentOS server available as an option for members who prefer to work on that system, having two (or five) VPSes will still be cheaper than what I was paying for my own Internet connection.
Secondly, in reflecting on my performance as an administrator for this service, I see that there are times when I am more active and times where I am less active in my duties. So I am going to be looking for a partner administrator. If there was a second person to take care of new applications and to help members solve problems, then neither of us would feel the pressure of having to be available 100% of the time. It would also be great if said person would pay 50% of the rental cost, but that is not a must.
For all members who have been patiently waiting, and for all new applicants who applied after the fire, please know that I will contact you when the new server is up. I have not lost any application so you don't have to re-apply.
I am hoping to get the new server running by June 1st at the latest.
