Free Shell Accounts
Free SSH shells for you!

Last week I got an email from the abuse department of my ISP.  Their automated message said that there is a service with an exploitable vulnerability running on "one of my devices".  Apparently it was SSDP - the Simple Service Discovery Protocol, which can be used to facilitate a DDoS attack.

Their system found that this SSDP service was available on UDP port 32788.

This could be one of the users of my shell server violating the terms of service, or it could be unrelated to the shell server altogether.  I tried to log into my modem, and found that the administrative web page would not load.  Even though the Internet connection was up, this part of my modem was down.  So I power cycled the modem.

First, this is a notice to everyone that the server's temporary address is

I have a bunch of stuff to catch up on, and this week will be the week that I put time into doing so.

First, I have almost 40 applications to process, which basically means sending out emails inviting the applicants to the IRC channel for a quick interview.  The daunting part is that I face having to actually work out times to talk with all these applicants.  I know, I know, it is a pain to have to do this, but it is necessary to help ensure that applicants know that I have zero tolerance for violations of the terms of service.

Next, I have emails to answer.  I will reply to the messages in my gmail as well as any local emails sent to my a...

In setting up this service, I put my own time and money into it without expecting anything in return.

I intend to create an environment which supports learning how to use unix-like systems, learning programming, and learning how computers work at a better level than most people do.

I did not set up the service for criminals to take advantage of innocent people.  I recently invited the police over to my house to investigate suspicious activity on my server, something I was greatly displeased with having to do.  But I will do it again if necessary.

If there was ever an idea that a free shell service is a safe place to commit crimes without anyone noticing or caring, THIS IS NOT THE CASE HERE.

There is only so much that one can do to pre...

Well the server has been up for about a month without any problems.  We now have 23 users registered.  My next task is to find an IRC channel or to install my own IRC server for us to chat in.

When I first launched the server, I was really excited to be doing something that I had wanted to do for years.  I eagerly awaited new users, checking several times each day for new applications.  Yet around the 20th of November I began to lose interest in my server.  Sure, excitement doesn't last forever, but you're probably wondering why so soon?

Well truth be told, I suffer from depression which really gets in the way of my enjoyment of life and inhibits productivity when it gets bad.  But I am reminded that my service, even though it is free of char...

I am happy to announce that the "Your Free Shell" server is now up.  From what little interest there has been so far, the main preference has been for a Debian OS.  So I have installed the latest Debian, version 8.6.  I will continue to accept requests for any package to be installed on the system.  So if you haven't already signed-up for an account, feel free to do so!
