Free Shell Accounts
Free SSH shells for you!

I have rented a VPS as of today.  It is Debian 9 64-bit.  I need to get the home folders uploaded and then process all the pending applications.  I can see there are a lot of duplicates, so again, please don't re-apply until I announce that I'm caught up.  And of course my depression has to be getting in the way as I take on the task of getting it all going again.

Once the basic configuration is done I will be available on IRC again.

Thanks for your patience!

It has been about a month and I have been feeling terrible. I experienced such overwhelming negative emotions that I went to hospital to see a crisis counselor.

It sucks that depression has been blocking progress, even after I paid the first month's rental to get a VPS running. But on the other hand, if my mind was stable and I was employed or attending school, I probably would have even less time and energy to allocate to this service.

For now, I expect that you've got service with another shell provider. I am sorry that mine has been down for so many months.  It should be simple to sign up for a shell account, because of their educational value and because they are free of charge, but I know it isn't the case.  From my experience,...

I have been thinking about the first year of running YFS and what I need to improve on. The first and foremost issue is finances.  I thought it would be smart to re-use an old laptop for the shell server, but because the cost of a residential Internet connection is way more per system than at a data centre, I am going to have to run YFS on a virtual private server.

Even if I go ahead with my plan to make a CentOS server available as an option for members who prefer to work on that system, having two (or five) VPSes will still be cheaper than what I was paying for my own Internet connection.

Secondly, in reflecting on my performance as an administrator for this service, I see that there are times when I am more active and times where I am...

There was a fire at my house. It started in the bedroom next to mine and luckily I was home to notice it when nobody else was.  I called the fire department and they put it out before it could spread to other areas of the house.

Because of the remaining dampness from the fire department putting out the fire, I was asked to unplug all the outlets on the side of my room closest to the affected area.  This includes unplugging the laptop that was the free shell server.

This means the free shell service will be suspended indefinitely until I get the okay to plug my electronics back in - and even then, I might have to subsequently move out temporarily for repairs to be done to the structure of the house.

All I can say is I'm sorry for this...

Last week I got an email from the abuse department of my ISP.  Their automated message said that there is a service with an exploitable vulnerability running on "one of my devices".  Apparently it was SSDP - the Simple Service Discovery Protocol, which can be used to facilitate a DDoS attack.

Their system found that this SSDP service was available on UDP port 32788.

This could be one of the users of my shell server violating the terms of service, or it could be unrelated to the shell server altogether.  I tried to log into my modem, and found that the administrative web page would not load.  Even though the Internet connection was up, this part of my modem was down.  So I power cycled the modem.

 When it...
